Using GreenTracer fairly

GreenTracer is a free website carbon checker, currently in beta. These terms explain what you can expect from us, and what we ask of you when you use it.

Last updated: 10 October 2026

About these terms

GreenTracer is operated by BuzzBoost Ltd (“we”, “us”). By using the website, running a check or adding a GreenTracer badge to a site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Our privacy and cookies policy explains how we handle data, including what becomes public when you check a website.

The service

GreenTracer estimates the carbon emissions of a single web page. It measures how much data the page transfers, checks whether the host is listed as green by The Green Web Foundation, and applies the Sustainable Web Design Model (SWDM v4). Each result is published as a report, and website owners can show a free badge that links to it.

The service is free and in beta. Features may change, and some may not always work as expected.

Using GreenTracer fairly

When you use GreenTracer, please:

  • only check websites that you own, manage or are otherwise allowed to test, and only public pages;
  • not check addresses that contain private or personal information, such as names, email addresses or access tokens;
  • use the service at a reasonable pace. Do not use scripts, bots or other automated tools to run large numbers of checks, and do not try to get around our limits;
  • not try to disrupt, overload, probe or gain unauthorised access to GreenTracer or the services it relies on;
  • not use GreenTracer, its reports or its badges to mislead people or for anything unlawful.

We may limit, block or remove access, checks or reports where we reasonably believe these terms have been broken, or to protect the service.

Estimates, not guarantees

Results are estimates. They are based on one measurement of one page, and on the published assumptions of SWDM v4, including a global average grid intensity. Real emissions depend on many things we cannot see, such as how visitors use the page and how a host’s energy is supplied.

The hosting result reflects The Green Web Foundation’s listing only. It is not our own assessment of a host’s energy use.

Please do not rely on GreenTracer results as audited, certified or verified figures, or as the basis for formal reporting or environmental claims. They are a useful guide for comparing pages and deciding what to improve.

Public reports

Every check creates a public report that anyone with the link can view. It shows the page that was checked, the estimate, the grade, the hosting status and the date. When a page is checked again, the earlier results are kept as history.

If a report concerns your website and you think it should be reviewed or removed, email hello@buzzboost.co.uk with the report link.

Badges

You are welcome to show a GreenTracer badge on a website you own or manage. If you do:

  • use the embed code we provide, and do not alter the badge, its wording or the result it shows;
  • only show a badge for the website the report is about;
  • do not present the badge as a certification, an audit or an endorsement of your organisation by GreenTracer or BuzzBoost Ltd;
  • keep the link to the report, so visitors can see where the result comes from.

Badges go out of date after a set time, so an old result is not shown as current. When a badge loads, it tells us which page it is on, as explained in our privacy policy. We may stop a badge from displaying if it is used in a misleading way.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep GreenTracer running smoothly, but it is a free beta service and we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change, suspend or stop any part of it, including to protect its reliability or security. Checks also depend on outside services, such as Google PageSpeed Insights and The Green Web Foundation, which may sometimes be unavailable.

Our responsibility to you

GreenTracer is provided free of charge and “as is”. As far as the law allows, we do not give any promises about the accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose of results, reports or badges, and we are not responsible for decisions made or claims published based on them.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law, or affects your legal rights as a consumer.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as GreenTracer develops. The date at the top shows when they were last changed. If you keep using the service after a change, the updated terms apply.
